WELLINGTON Bowling Club's Lions, Tigers and Pumas were expecting to play against other clubs last week but because of the hot weather only the Lions braved the heat against Cullompton's Culm Vale.
The match was due to start at 2.30 p.m. but it was brought forward to 10.30 in order to try to avoid the worst of the high temperatures.
There were two games played. Wellington won one of them and Culm Vale won the other. It was a closely fought battle but Wellington won it overall.
The Wellington club is always pleased to welcome old friends from Cullompton. The Culm Vale Bowling Club has been in existence for a long time. It was established in 1931 and it has flourished to this day.
When the Cullompton bowlers come to Wellington the home team know that they will come up against strong opposition but they never give up and always do all they can to win.
A great deal of care had to be taken to ensure that the extremely heat did not cause any problems so cold drinks were provided for all the bowlers all through the match.
On the first rink, Wellington Lions's Jay Merrell, Tony Gibson and Graham Brown did not start too well. They were 3 – 4 down after four ends but they collected 8 shots in the next four ends to take a big lead 11 – 4.
The Culm Vale side did all they could but the Wellington trio was too strong and won comfortably 22 – 7.
Pete Nichols, Nick Channon and Mike Groves' Lions were level with their opponents after five ends but the Devon side pulled ahead to win a close game 18 – 11.
When the scores were totted up, the Wellington Lions were the winners by 33 shots to 25.
