WELLINGTON Bowling Club welcomed four men's teams from Bridgwater to play in the Turnbull Cup competition, a county inter-club event - but, unfortunately, the home side just missed out.

Wellington won two of the four games and Bridgwater won the other two. It was a very close battle but Bridgwater were the victors by just 3 shots - 66 to 63.

On the first rink, Peter White, Darren Sparks, Tony Gibson and David Beaudet's Wellington side found themselves level on 6 each after 9 ends. They were still level after 14 ends but the Bridgwater side scored 7 shots in the last three ends to pinch it on the line 17 – 10.

Barry Cutler, Bill Warnett, Jay Merrell and Phil Ellis were on top form in their game. They led from the start and all the Bridgwater side could do was chase the game. They did everything they could but the Wellington four could not be caught and they celebrated a comfortable win by 12 shots, 22 – 10.

Robert Newton, Andy Dart, Julian Street and Graham Brown's Wellington side got off to a good start. They led 6 - 3 after seven ends.

Unfortunately, for the Wellington quartet, the Bridgwater side picked up the pace, scoring heavily in the final ends to overtake and win 23 - 11.

Peter Barlow, Nick Channon, Paul Kelly and Mike Groves' Wellington side were 5 shots down at 6 – 11 after ten ends but they picked up 8 shots in the 11th and 12th ends which made a big difference.

Unfortunately it was not a big enough difference because although they won by four shots, 20 – 16, they lost overall 66 – 63.

So Wellington are out of the Turnbull Cup this year but are looking forward to entering the Wedmore Plate competition which is coming up shortly.
