WADEBRIDGE CAMELS 35 WELLINGTON 15

WELLINGTON put up a spirited fight before losing to the Cornish side in Regional Two South West, writes Barry Knott.

The result enabled Camels to pull off the season's double over Wellington, having won 20-10 at the Athletic Ground in mid-December.

It was Wellington's 13th loss of the season in the league, but they remain ninth in the table with every chance of a possible seventh-placed finish with two home games remaining - against North Petherton tomorrow (Sat) and bottom side Burmham on Sea.

Wellington's head coach Graham Dawe said after Saturday's defeat: "We did well to keep them out for much of the first half. We scored two tries early in the second half and looked like gaining two bonus points.

"The boys had a good attitude and it was a fine game of rugby. We certainly held our own for the first 30 minutes against a very accomplished side."

Ash Harney, Cam Venn and new centre Billy Brooks scored tries for Wellington who trailed 21-0 at the interval.

Elsewhere, leaders Sidmouth gained an impressive 44-13 home victory over Cullompton to move a step closer to the title while second-placed Topsham won 38-5 on their own ground against Chard.

Wellington 2nd XV's game against Crewkerne in Counties Three Somerset South was postponed because of the poor state of the pitch at the Athletic Ground following a week of rain.

Wellington Under 18s' annual game against Wellington School for the Sam Sherwin Memorial Trophy on Thursday of last week was also called off for the same reason.

Tomorrow (Sat) Wellington entertain North Petherton who are only two places above them in the table, while Wellington 2nd XV are away to their Petherton counterparts in Counties Three Somerset South.

Wiveliscombe, who have been struggling near the bottom of the season but have improved towards the latter part of the season, are away to bottom side Falmouth in Counties One Western West and will be looking to complete the season's double over their rivals, having won 22-17 at home in early December.

Wiveliscombe 2nds are home to Bridgwater & Albion in a local derby in Counties Three Somerset South. Wiveliscombe are lying 11th in the table and Bridgwater eighth.

Albion beat Wivey 77-6 at home when the sides played each other in the early part of this year.
