WELLINGTON Cricket Club’s senior men’s teams head into the final six games of the season looking to kick on.

The first team, who are fifth in the West of England Premier League Somerset division following Saturday’s 44-run defeat to Temple Cloud, head to Ilminster (midday) who are joint top with Taunton Deane and have designs of securing promotion to Premier Two Gloucestershire/Somerset.

In the reverse fixture back in May, Welly ran out comfortable six-wicket winners having dismissed their opponents for 194.

Sri Lankan pro Lakshan Edirisinghe (3-39) and Nathan Yarde (3-19) shared six wickets before Edirisinghe’s unbeaten 89 took them to victory after a rapid start from openers George Ruell (24) and Stian Smith (37).

The seconds welcome Burnham-on-Sea to the Recreation Ground in Division Two of the Somerset Cricket League looking to maintain their promotion hopes.

They are just two points behind leaders West Monkton, but most importantly have a 19-point cushion on third-placed Staplegrove who are a further four clear of Broadway and Horton.

Wellington will go into the clash with good memories of the fixture back in May which they won by six wickets as Neil Hendy (3-37) and Alex Derbridge (3-19) shared six wickets in Burnham’s 146 all out.

That target looked a fair way off when they fell to 12-3, but wicketkeeper Aks Latifi (47) and Ben Evett took on the bowling in a stand of 98, the latter eventually finishing 77 not out from just 67 balls.

Latifi made 59 in Saturday’s eight-wicket success at Huntspill and District, while Hendy’s 77 not out helped them reach their target of 191.

This Saturday sees the third team have the weekend off in Division Seven Red, while on Sunday the Under 11s are due to visit Wombat and the ladies’ softball team goes to Taunton.
