LEWIS Gregory, who is Somerset’s second most successful captain, has signed a two-year contract extension committing his future to the club until at least the end of the 2027 season.
The all rounder, who played club cricket for Plympton, progressed through the Devon age groups and represented the senior Devon side before joining Somerset from the Academy in 2010.
The 33-year-old made his Somerset First XI debut against Pakistan in September of that year and since then has become a vital member of the squad, captaining the side to Vitality Blast glory in 2023 and 2025.
Lewis, who is Somerset’s all-time leading wicket taker in T20 cricket, was awarded his County Cap in 2015 and was named club captain in 2024. In total, he has scored more than 7500 runs and taken 637 wickets for the County.
Meanwhile, following two months speculation, it has been announced that Somerset CCC has been deducted points in the Rothesay County Championship. Following a hearing on September 11th, the independent Cricket Discipline Panel (‘CDP’) confirmed Somerset have been deducted four points with a further four-point deduction being suspended until the end of the 2027 County Championship season.
The sanction has been imposed for what has been deemed as a breach of the ECB Pitch Regulations following an investigation by the Cricket Regulator after the Match Officials for the Somerset v Durham Rothesay County Championship match in July rated the pitch as “Below Average”.
Somerset CEO Jamie Cox said: “While we are disappointed by the outcome, we are pleased that the tribunal rejected any suggestion that the club deliberately sought to produce a substandard wicket. We would also like to thank the CDP for their clarity and transparency throughout the hearing process.”
Cox added: “Somerset CCC will always aspire to produce the best possible pitches which will ensure an enthralling contest between bat and ball.”
