WELLINGTON look to make up for the disappointment of losing on the opening day of the cricket season when they play away to neighbours Staplegrove in the Somerset Division of the West of England Premier League on Saturday.

Wellington met one of the favourites for the championship Weston super Mare over the weekend at the Playing Field - and lost by 74 runs.

Ryan Davies, who is on the books of Somerset, scored 61 of Weston’s runs in 38 balls as Weston made 227 all out.

Despite a fine 54 by skipper Alex Sparks, Wellington were bowled out for 153.

“Sometimes just one player can make all the difference,” said Sparks afterwards.

“I felt we came out of the game with some positives and hopefully we can beat Staplegrove on Saturday. This is the kind of league in which any side can beat anyone on their day.”

Like Wellington, the Grove also lost over the weekend - to Minehead by 91 runs.

Wellington are preparing for a big weekend because they will be staging a triangular National T20 event on Sunday involving Taunton Deane and Minehead.

Wellington have never been able to get out of the first round but Sparks is hoping to do this at the weekend.

“It’s going to be a very tiring weekend,” added Sparks. “It will be tough but it can also be very enjoyable. We’re hoping to be at full strength for a full day of absorbing cricket.

“You often play sides in a higher division to you in this competition so you have to be at your best if you are going to win.

“It’s early days yet but we must starting winning games and what better way than at Staplegrove this weekend.

“This would set us up nicely for the two games on Sunday and it would be nice to get some support.”

Wellington’s players will be in coloured kit for the day’s two ties.
