WELLINGTON look almost certain to have retained their status in the Somerset Division of the West of England Premier Cricket League, writes Barry Knott.

Although their crucial last match of the season at home to Wembdon eventually on Saturday became a victim of bad weather, Wellington have avoided finishing in the relegation zone – but only by four points.

It means Frome and Butleigh go down, although there had been talk of three being relegated.

“We’re almost sure we’re safe,” said Wellington skipper Alex Sparks who says he has enjoyed the season.

Wellington had Wembdon in big trouble at 46-7 on Saturday when a storm swept in and ended play.

“This was another game in which the weather robbed us of a win,” added Sparks. “It has been a tough season and we expect it to be equally as tough next season.

“We have some young players who will be will be more street-wise next season. We want to play at the highest level – we certainly did not want to go down.

"We know that next season we have to score more runs. My own form has been consistent but I haven’t made a big score. That’s something you have to do to win games.”

Wellington’s other two senior sides - the seconds and thirds - finished runners-up in their respective divisions in the Somerset Cricket League - Five and Eight South.

Ashbrittle finished sixth in the premier division of the Somerset Cricket League after their home game against Taunton Deane on Saturday was washed out.
