WELLINGTON’S interest in 2026's Somerset Cricket Foundation Knockout Cup suite ended when the 2nd XI were beaten by seven wickets at home by SCL Premier Division side Wembdon 2nd XI at the Intermediate Cup level at the Lloyd and Whyte Community Broking Ground, writes David Derrick.

Alex Derbidge chose to bat first on winning the toss and saw Ben Evett and Aks Latifi open up for the Red and Blacks second string and with knocks of 24 in 17 balls with five fours and 16 in 12 balls with two fours respectively as an opening stand of 41 was posted by the time Evett was out and the half century was on the board by the time Latifi was dismissed.

It was downhill from there though as seven wickets were lost for 36 runs to be all out for 86 in 15.2 overs as Davies with 4-6 in four overs and Baker with 3-11 in four overs bowled excellently for the Bridgwater area based side who play one SCL division above Wellington at reserve team level.

Wembdon 2nd XI would need 87 to win and so progress to the second round and receive North Petherton 1st XI. Alex Derbidge nipped out the wicket of Anning as Jack Holloway took the chance offered to him to make the visitors 12-1.

Opener Harris with an eventual 41 and Puddy with a solid 23 not out pretty much took their side to the win despite Ollie Hunt and Rob Moysey extracting a wicket each with the Wembdon score in the mid seventies and low eighties.

The next senior section T20 action at the Lloyd and Whyte Community Broking Ground is on Monday 1st June when the 1st XI hosts fellow WEPL Somerset Division side North Perrott in a Baker Cup first round fixture that commences at 6.00pm
