WELLINGTON 2nd XI are bottom of Division One in the Somerset League following a heavy home defeat by visiting Wells and Horrington, writes David Derrick
Put into bat, the Red and Blacks’ second string were despatched for 119 in 36.5 overs. Aks Latifi continued his good 2026 season with both bat and gloves as he hit 26 in 31 balls with five fours as opener, but he was dismissed with the score at 39-3.
Forty one runs were added by Neil Hendy and Alex Derbidge as they took the score from 51-4 to 92; Derbidge was the batter removed to break this partnership as he was adjudged LBW for 20 in 44 balls with three fours. Hendy continued to 25 to be ninth out at 106-9 having made a studious 25 in 72 balls.
Last pair Macca Campbell and Jake Nichol worked hard to get a sixth batting point for Wellington, but they agonisingly fell one run short having added a spirited 13 run stand.
W and H are fifth following this result, but looked better than that as they bowled with accuracy and fielded with aplomb to see Smart take 2-16 in seven good opening spell overs, Glover with 2-23 in nine overs was 'on the money', M. Williams with 3-21 in nine overs of good quality leg spin was top value for his figures and the visitors saw Johnson's slow medium pace with 3-6 in 2.5 overs wrap matters up with for eights overs unused. For the second week in a row Wellington Seconds were subjected to a brutal display of hitting as opener Hunt made 101 not out in 59 balls with 16 fours and four sixes.
Ollie Hunt and Alex Derbidge took a wicket each, but W and H reached their target in 16.5 overs. Scores: Wellington 2nd XI 119, Wells & Horrington 120-2.
