WEDNESDAY, June 24, saw Rockwell Green shortmat bowlers make the short trip to Staplegrove for a midsummer friendly in what turned out to be the hottest day of the year so far with temperatures hovering around 32 degrees.
Two of the Staplegrove players withdrew due to the heat even before the match got underway in sweltering conditions not experienced by any of the players before.
Getting things started (Green names first ) Graham, Reg & Paul against Heather, Steve & Paul. The Staplegrove trio adapted well to the heat and just kept nudging in front to take the game 10--6 - a good start for the home side.
Next up Syd, Mick & Linda against Peter & Rita (both playing 3 woods ). It was all square up to the 7th end when the home trio pulled away to take the game 11--6 - which was another good result for the home outfit.
Last up before the break Dave, Bill & John Y playing Pat & John L (both playing 3 woods ). The Green trio were well on top not allowing Staplegrove on the scoreboard until the 8th end with the Green trio well in front 12--0 and finishing with a final score 13--3.
A very welcome break was taken for tea/coffee with both teams beginning to succumb to the heat. As the temperature was still nudging 30 degrees both captains decided to abandon the match much to all players' relief. Not that it really matters but scores were Staplegrove 24 the Green 25,a close match up until this stage.
Obviously, the half-time score meant there was everything to play for after the interval. But with non of the players experiencing such conditions - certainly in this country - it was agreed by all to call it a day - and one not to forget!
