WELLINGTON 2nd XI kept up the pressure at the top of Division Two in the Somerset Cricket League with an exciting two-wicket home victory over their Taunton counterparts at the Playing Field.
Taunton won the toss and chose to bat first, scoring 166-6 in their 40 overs after a poor start in which they lost four wickets for only 44 runs.
Opener Jake Wigley was their leading scorer with 49 before being run out in going for his half-century. Nelson Taylor (54 not out) and Austin White (24 not out) shared in an unbroken seventh-wicket stand of 74 runs. Tom Hopkins took 3-21, Macaulay Campbell 1-35 and veteran all-rounder Rob Moysey 1-21.
Wellington, chasing their fourth win in five matches, got off to a fine start with openers James Brackenbury (38) and Paul Short (46) putting on 79 for the first wicket. However, after this wickets began to tumble at regular intervals as Wellington made hard work of knocking off the required runs.
Charlie Burrough scored a crucial 22 and Moysey was still there at the close with a vital 12 not out as Wellington sneaked over the line with three balls to spare. Connors Burrows took 3-25, Taylor 3-21 and Joshua Nelson 2-37.
Meanwhile, Burnham on Sea, who lost for the first time this season to Wellington the previous weekend, lost again when they crashed to a ten wicket loss away to Broadway & Horton.
Burnham were bowled out for 187 and Broadway hit off the runs in 27.5 overs with Dylan Lowman being the star of the show. He hammered an unbeaten 145 which included 24 fours and three sixes while fellow opener Will Vickery scored 29 not out.
Staplegrove beat Huntspill & District by 36 runs to move up to fourth in the table.
