WELLINGTON made the long journey to Frome in the Somerset Division of the West of England Premier League last weekend - and it was a fruitful visit for Jacob Hurry's charges, writes David Derrick.

They collected twenty points and are up to second in the division, fifteen points behind leaders Ilminster after seven match days in 2026.

An 8am meet for a breakfast rendezvous en route emphasised the nature of the journey that was to be undertaken in search of a fourth win of the season and on arrival at Fromefield the home side won the toss and chose to bat first.

Their total of 222-7 in fifty overs was based on a 68 run fourth wicket stand between Corbett with 62 in 76 balls and Padgett with 36 in 67 balls with other punchy smaller partnerships adding to the overall Frome effort as well as 36 extras.

George Davis with 2-35 in eight overs was good value for his figures as Brendan Poole, who has joined the Red and Blacks from Brompton Ralph, took two excellent catches on debut. Toby Stirzaker went for only 30 runs in a total of ten overs and there was a wicket for Arron Campbell too.

Lakshan Edirisinghe was again good value with 2-28 in ten overs of off spin in the middle section of the Frome innings. Sam Whitefield and a run out secured the seven wickets that Wellington claimed.

It would be 223 to win at 4.46 runs per over after tea. The Wellington reply did not start well as the score dipped to 5-2 as Cox, who took an eventual 4-39 in ten overs and Veal, got in 'among them' early.

Pleasingly though Wellington regrouped and a scintillating 135-run stand for the third wicket between Whitefield and Edirisinghe put the run chase back on track. Whitefield made 53 in 85 balls with seven fours and was run out when a call for no ball was not best managed by the standing officials, resulting in confusion as to what had been meant or not meant by the call and an attempted run was not completed in time.

Edirisinghe is in prime form so far since coming back as Wellington's overseas player for a second season as he got to within six of a century, making 94 in 103 balls with eleven fours and two sixes before he fell to Cox, who had come back for his second spell.

Arron Campbell with a solid 17 had aided Edirisinghe all the way. Jacob Hurry and Toby Stirzaker were at the crease when the winning runs were struck with a massive nine overs to spare and the long ride home was looking a lot more favourable.

There are some big games coming up for the side in the next two weeks at both league and cup levels with visits from both Wembdon and Ilminster to the Lloyd and Whyte Cricket Ground and a journey of their own to Chard in WEPL's Somerset Division in between those two games, a home Baker Cup quarter final against WEPL Premier One's Bridgwater and a visit to Wiltshire to take on Trowbridge and Bristol based side Bishopston in WEPL's Four Regions T20 Cup for Tier Three sides at the Phase Two stage on Sunday, 28th June.
