WELLINGTON 2nd XI, playing in Division One of the Somerset League in 2026, were another Red and Blacks side that had their game washed away on the opening day of the new season, writes David Derrick.
Wedmore were the visitors to Courtland Road following their relegation from the SCL Premier Division at the end of the 2025 season and they were asked to bat first by Wellington skipper Rob Moysey who won the toss.
Masters with 22 and Boley with 29 got Wedmore's effort with the bat underway to a solid start, but both fell to Moysey who took 2-40 in seven overs. Following their double departure Tonkin with 35no and Tucker with 47no took Wedmore to 143-2 in 24 of their 45 over allocation, but there was no more play possible due to the inclement weather. Wellington 2nd XI took 14 points and Wedmore 19 from the draw. Scores: Wedmore 143-2, Wellington 2nd XI (dnb).
Meanwhile, the rain that followed Wellington's 1st team east to Ilminster also chased their 3rd team west to Cannington College where Wembdon 5th XI were the hosts in a Somerset League Division Seven South fixture.
Tyler Fyfe opted to bat first and he and his deputy Tony Hutchings opened for the Red and Blacks and got twenty runs on the board before Hutchings was bowled.
20-0 became 26-3, but a knock of 11no from former skipper Des Campbell and a robust effort of 33 with two sixes from a newcomer from Sri Lanka who now resides in the UK in Jhansherad Fernando got Wellington to 77-4 when Fernando was out bowled by Hooper who was expensive in conceding 33 runs in 2.5 overs.
Aayan Kazi was at the crease with Campbell when the match was abandoned. Hill took 2-7. Scores: Wellington 3rd XI 81-4 (16), Wembdon 5th XI (16).
