WELLINGTON eased their relegation worries with a three-wicket home victory over fellow strugglers Frome over the weekend, writes Barry Knott.
And although they are still in the drop zone, they have six games remaining in which to pull out of trouble.
Frome are now third from bottom, with Wellington just six points adrift of their rivals. “It is difficult to know how many games we need to win to make sure we are safe,” said Wellington skipper Alex Sparks.
“We could easily move up the table if we win a couple of games. This division is tough and any team is capable of winning on the day.
“We need to win three matches - perhaps even four. It was crucial we beat Frome because if we hadn’t we would have been in deep trouble.”
Wellington face a tough away game against local rivals Staplegrove this coming weekend. The Grove have a strong side which includes ex-county players Steffan Jones and Ian Bishop.
“What we’re looking for at the moment is back to back victories,” added Sparks. “We need to build up momentum. We were unfortunate against Staplegrove earlier this season because we were in a good position when the rain came down and the game was abandoned.
“We want to stay in this league because we will be that much more experienced next year.”
Ashbrittle will be looking to bounce back at home to Uphill Castle in the Premier Division of the Somerset League on Saturday after losing to Middlezoy away over the weekend and title-chasing Wiveliscombe will be out to beat Sampford Arundel in Division One of the West Somerset League after they, too, lost to West Monkton.
