WEMBDON 171-9

WELLINGTON 172-5

WELLINGTON gained a fine win at Wembdon last Saturday afternoon in WEPL Covid Playing Bubble C as Arron Campbell’s team came away with a five-wicket win with over two overs to spare after chasing down 172 to win, and so collected two points, writes David Derrick.

Wembdon chose to bat first and Puddy went at the ball hard. He looked dangerous when he carted a huge six as part of 16 runs he took off one over but Jack Beal induced him to play on.

His fellow opener, former Wellington player Tom Brooks, was well caught behind by Callum Hendy off Luke Desave.

Sourati with 28 played a good hand in the middle order, but after he was run out in a calamitous manner with his skipper Brockwell, only Dickins with 31 and Pigden with 10 prospered for Wembdon.

They rather got into a muddle playing the last ten overs of their innings. Neil Hendy with 5-30 in eight controlled and tidy overs broke the back of the Wembdon innings, with Arron Campbell letting just 32 runs go from his eight overs. Wembdon made 171-9 in their allocated 40 over block.

Sam Whitefield and Nathan Roberts had 14 on the board for Wellington as they sought out the runs they needed before Roberts was caught at short cover.

Alex Sparks joined Whitefield and they took the score to 59 before Whitefield was adjudged LBW for 20. Sparks fell next ball in the same way for 22 and at 59-3 Wellington had to consolidate.

Arron Campbell was joined by Callum Hendy and they took the score to 90 as the young left-handed wicketkeeper/batsman made a colourful knock of 17.

Skipper Campbell was always building an innings and in the end his 42no was invaluable. He was joined by Luke Desave with 37 and Jack Beal with a match ending 16no who punished the bad ball when it came along. For Wembdon, Woolway with 2-37 in eight overs was their best bowler analysis-wise.

Next time out on Saturday in WEPL Covid Playing Bubble C Wellington host WEPL Premier One side Bridgwater 1st XI, who will be stocked to the rafters with some of the best club players in the West Country. This represents a tasty challenge for the Red and Blacks and the action gets under way at 12.30pm.
