WELLINGTON AFC are looking for a new first-team manager after Richard Cherry informed the club that he has decided to step down from the role.

Former manager Tim Legg has agreed to take interim charge ahead of the club appointing a permanent successor.

Richard took over from joint bosses Tim and Alex Pope in May 2023 and has been manager for two seasons.

Chairman Mike Hall said: “Richard feels he can no longer give the job his full energy, with work and personal commitments along with having to travel to and from his home in Torquay.

“He feels it would be in everyone’s interests if someone else takes over and we respect his decision. We’d like to place on record our sincere thanks for all his hard work and dedication during his time at Wellington AFC – there will always be a warm welcome for him at our club.”

Mike added: “We are incredibly grateful to Tim Legg for stepping into the breach as we prepare to get the new season under way.”

Wellington finished 13th in the Jewson Western League Premier Division last season – their best position, and with the highest points total, for a number of years. The club are now inviting applications for the position of first team manager/coach with a closing date of July 31st. Anyone interested should email [email protected], including full details of any previous managerial/coaching experience and qualifications.

Meanwhile, Wellington recorded their first pre-season victory with a 1-0 win over Middlezoy Rovers in sweltering condtions on the all-weather pitch at Court Fields School.

The only goal was scored in the 20th minute when Nathan Byrne got behind Rovers’ defence and his cross was clinically dispatched by Eddie Townsend who has come up through the club’s youth ranks.
