SHEPTON MALLET 0

WELLINGTON 0

HAVING been beaten easily at Cadbury Heath, Wellington bounced back to gain a well-earned point in the Premier Division of the Toolstation League at Shepton on Tuesday night.

It was a game which both sides could have won but Wellington boss Tim Legg, who put himself on the bench for this game, would have been pleased with a blank sheet after the seven goals conceded at Cadbury only four days earlier.

In an exciting finish, Shepton hit the underside of the crossbar in the 83rd minute while Wellington had appeals for a penalty for handball turned down in the 89th minute.

In the early stages of the game, Wellington’s ex-Colchester United goalkeeper Chandler Hallett was almost caught out by a Shepton free kick and Jason Quick blocked a goal-bound shot as the visitors soaked up pressure early on.

But Wellington had a great chance to take the lead in the 22nd minute when Jesse Howe pounced on a mistake in Shepton’s defence but fired over the crossbar.

James Clough looked lively for Wellington early in the second half, putting a shot over the crossbar and sending in a dangerous cross with no-one there to add the finishing touch.

As the game continued it looked as though one goal would decide it but in the end a draw was a fair result.

Wellington: Chandler Hallett, Josh Champion, Jason Quick, Jordan Casey, Jack Lewis, Harry Walford, James Clough, Miles Quick, Mason Raymond, Jamie Vaughan-Ryall, Jesse Howe. Subs: Cameron Sanford (for Clough 80 minutes), Tom Davies, Ollie Holman, Tim Legg (not used). Attendance: 145.

Meanwhile, Wellington have another away game in the league today (Saturday) when they play Bradford Town who reached the fifth round of the FA Vase last season.

On Wednesday, Wellington have a derby clash with Bridgwater Town in their first home game of the season (7.30pm).

Wellington A are home to Redgate in the first division of the Britannia Lane Taunton Saturday League today (Saturday, Court Fields School, 2.30pm).

WELLINGTON Reserves play their first game of the season in Division One West of the Devon and Exeter League away to North Tawton tomorrow week (September 19).

Hemyock’s opening game in Division Three West is also away – to St Martins Reserves.
