WELLINGTON’S football manager Clive Jones has been given a “massive boost” this week with the news that centre-back Kae Fisher, 25, has committed himself to the club for next season.
Jones, who begins his second season in charge of the Toolstation League first division side, said yesterday: “I didn’t expect Kae to stay with us.
“He has already received two cash offers from other clubs to play for them. His decision to commit himself to Wellington is a massive boost. He is a class player and I now have to prove to him that we’re going places.
“If Tom Ellis commits himself we will have one of the best centre-back pairings in the league, not just the first division.”
So far Jones has been encouraged by the number of players who say they want to stay at the Playing Field, including the four Bryant brothers.
However, he still has to find a goalkeeper who will play regularly. Local boy Mitch Woodgate played in goal last season but he wants to play out on the pitch.
“I’ve no problem with that. In fact it helps me because he would be the obvious choice to put in goal if I lose my goalkeeper for one reason or another.
“Mitch is a good left-footed player and there are not a lot of those around.
“I’ve promised this summer that I will work harder than last year. I want to get things sorted as quickly as possible and to get all the players signed on.”
Wellington finished 12th in Division One of the Toolstation League last season, at one time looking as though they might finish as high as sixth.
None of the players are paid which means Jones has to contend with players being tempted to move away for money. So far he has been very successful in keeping his players.
The club will be running three senior sides, the others being the Reserves and Thirds, who both play in the Devon and Exeter League.
Wellington AFC’s annual meeting will be held in the clubhouse on Wednesday, June 22 (8.00).
