WELLINGTON’S former football manager Mike Hawes has ended his ties with the Toolstation League club.

Hawes, who quit at the end of last season after being in charge of Wellington for two years, had stayed on in a “consultant” role.

Clive Jones is now manager, having taken over the reigns from Hawes.

Hawes denies there had been a rift between himself and Jones and said yesterday: “I have left on good terms. Clive is very much his own man. There is no point in me being there any more. I might do something with another club but I have a lot of work on at the moment. I have had a couple of offers already but I’m going to take a break from football at the moment. Perhaps I might manage another club, but not for a year.”

Hawes works for the Hydrographic Department in Taunton and his job at times takes him all over the world.

Jones said: “It is a shame Mike has stepped down. He did not think he was contributing enough. It was a surprise to me when he said he was leaving. The club wanted him to stay. I am sure it will not be long before he is back in football. He has a lot to offer.”

Meanwhile Wellington, who won 4-3 away to Roman Glass on Saturday, have another away game in Division One of the Toolstation League on Saturday - away to Chipping Sodbury who are lying sixth in the table.

Jack Bryant, one of four brothers in Wellington’s first team squad, starts a three-match ban, but Sam Bryant and Jack Porter are likely to return. “This will be new territory for me and the team,” added Jones whose side have moved up to 15th in the table.

Jamie Clough, who has been injured for some weeks, is near to making himself fit again.

Wellington Reserves are home to Budleigh Salterton in Division One of the Devon and Exeter League while Hemyock have a tough away game against first division leaders Exmouth Amateurs in the Devon Senior Cup. Amateurs are 100 per cent this season
