WELLINGTON’S football manager Clive Jones says he will be disappointed if his side do not finish in a top-six position in Division One of the Toolstation League at the end of the season.
Jones, who took over from Mike Hawes during the summer, said yesterday: “If we don’t finish in the top-six I will consider that to be failure.
“We had a poor start to the season but we are now playing some good football.
“Although we cannot win anything now, we have to put challenges in front of us. I want to be entertaining because then people will come and watch us.”
Wellington will be looking to kick-start their season when they play away to Calne Town in the league this weekend. They beat them 1-0 at the Playing Field in November.
It will be two weeks since Wellington last played and gained their biggest win of the season – 7-0 at home to Devizes Town.
“Considering the conditions that was our best display of the season,” added Jones. “We scored goals and we didn’t concede – you can’t get much better than that.
“It’s just frustrating we haven’t played for a while – especially after our performance against Devizes. When you play well you want to get back out on the pitch as quickly as possible.”
Wellington, who have also gone four matches without conceding a goal, remain 12th in the table despite their enforced break.
Because of the wet conditions Jones is organising a training session in the hall of the clubhouse tonight (Jan 6).
“We’ve done this already this season,” added Jones. “The only problem is you cannot use balls. But I’ll make sure the players get up a sweat.”
Meanwhile, Wellington were without a match for the second successive Saturday when their game at Radstock over the weekend was called off because of a waterlogged pitch.
The fixture was postponed on Saturday morning but Radstock had warned Wellington the previous day that it was unlikely to be played.
Jones would have been able to field a full-strength side with goalkeeper Mitch Woodgate, a postman, available after the hectic Christmas for the Royal Mail.
Jones has since spoken to all the players and everyone is available for Saturday’s game at Calne.
