WELLINGTON go into Saturday’s home game against Bishop Sutton with a clear lead at the top of Division One in the Toolstation League (3.00).

They are three points ahead of main rivals and second-placed Keynsham Town – and also have a game in hand.

“The division is very tight – you can easily lose two or three games in a row,” said cautious Wellington boss Clive Jones who has made a big impact since he took over as manager 18 months ago.

“The lads have not been in this position before. They have to commit themselves for the next 17 games, which are all massive, and I know they will.”

Wellington, who are unbeaten in their last 18 league matches, will be looking to avenge a 1-0 home defeat by Bishop Sutton in the FA Vase in October.

Looking back at Wellington’s 4-1 victory over Bishops Lydeard on Boxing Day, Jones added: “It was a good performance but not one of our best of the season.

“We didn’t play very well in the opening 20 minutes and it was Ian Bellinger who got us going. He’s on fire at the moment.

“We’re not as yet playing well for the whole 90 minutes. But that will come.”

Postie Mitch Woodgate, who was unavailable for most of last month through work, returns to the squad and could replace left back Jack Porter who is unavailable for the rest of the season because of his commitments with the RAF. Woodgate can also play in goal if required.

Jones is looking to strengthen his defence. “I’ve had a chat with a couple of defenders and I expect one to be at training on Wednesday (tonight),” he added. “I want to make sure that the players I sign fit in. We have a good bunch of lads but the squad is thin at the moment.”

Wellington have long-term injuries to club skipper Sam Bryant, Olly Nott and Sam Towler while Jones also needs to replace Porter.

Wellington Reserves are again without a match in Division One of the Devon and Exeter League this weekend but will need to be at their best when they play at home to leaders Cronies on Saturday week.

Hemyock, third in Division Six, are away to Tivvy Park Rangers, while top of the table Wellington Thirds are away to struggling Colyton Reserves in Division Seven.

The Taunton Saturday, Keyline Sunday and Youth Leagues all restart this weekend.
