WELLINGTON skipper Sam Bryant is set to make his first appearance of the season in the away match against Corsham Town in Division One of the Toolstation League on Saturday, writes Barry Knott.
Corsham gained their first victory of the season when they beat Keynsham Town 2-1 away at the weekend.
Bryant, one of four footballing brothers with the club, has been struggling since he picked up a knee injury in a pre-season friendly.
“Sam was fit to play at Hengrove on Saturday but I decided not to risk him,” said Wellington boss Clive Jones yesterday.
Bryant will come into a squad which will be without Tim Legg and Scot Drayton, two of the side’s big players, who are both unavailable.
Wellington go into Saturday’s game top of the table and unbeaten in five away games, with four wins and a draw.
“We played our best football of the season at Hengrove (3-2) over the weekend,” added Jones. “It came only a few days after our worst performance of the season.
“Hengrove are the best team we have played this season and I expect them to finish in the top three.
“Saturday’s game was a match between two very good sides. It’s just a pity we allowed them to score twice at the end.
“It shows how important it is to stay switched on for the whole of the 90 minutes.
“We have no midweek game this week which is good because we have played all five of our games so far away from home.”
Wellington Reserves, now managed by Chris May and Dave Darch following Paul Sellick’s decision to step down, play their first game of the season tonight (Aug 24) at Bickleigh in Division One of the Devon and Exeter League. They are also away to Topsham Town on Saturday.
Wellington Thirds, who are again being managed by Ben Welsh, also play their first match when they visit Starcross to play HT Dons in Division Seven.
Hemyock, who have dropped down from Two to Six in the league, are not due to start until Saturday week when they play at home to Offwell Rangers (3.00).
