WIVELISCOMBE Rugby Club held its end of season dinner-dance at the rugby club on Friday which was attended by more than 100 players and partners, club officials, volunteers and supporters.
Following Grace, delivered by club president Dr John Rees, everyone enjoyed a three-course meal with the club’s under-14s becoming waiters for the evening.
Chairman Garry Sharland welcomed everyone present and went on to announce trophy winners for the season for their contributions on and off the field of play.
Peter Stone was made an honorary life member of the club for his dedication and hard work in all areas of the club’s progression over many seasons. His wife Tina received a bouquet of flowers.
Players’ player of the season was Matthew Ellis, a very popular choice.
Most improved first team player was awarded to Trevor Coates.
Second team players’ player was John Palk.
Although the club failed to run a colts team this season several in that age group played for the club’s 2nds.
One regular, Alex Cowling, was awarded the Dave Warren Memorial Cup for most improved colt. Colts player of the year was Archie Brammel.
Special awards were made to members from all areas within the club.
Coaches Pete and Brian Stone and Rob Weaver received framed first team photos for their work throughout the season.
Sue, Monica and Sandra were thanked for their work throughout the club during the season.
Volunteer of the year was Jamie Cook and supporter of the year was Eric Ellis.
Two popular choices were club captain Will Ellis, voted best playing club member, and Rachael Sharland, the junior rugby chairman, who was also involved in numerous duties throughout the season, and received the non-playing member of the season award.
Player Ross Pearson, who organised the club tour to Edinburgh, received a framed group photo of the touring party.
A few statistics from the season: Top points scored for 1sts – Dan Quick 151pts. Top try scorer – Jake Sharland 28 tries; prop Matt Ellis 15 tries.
Captain Will Ellis and fellow front rower Tom Stone played every game of the 2017-18 season.
The remainder of the evening was spent dancing to a live band and celebrating a great season for the club and congratulating all award winners.
