WELLINGTON’S football manager Tim Legg was looking to ‘finalise’ his first team squad for the new season following last night’s (Thursday’s) friendly at Axminster.
Earlier this week Legg strengthened the squad by signing two brothers from Bishops Lydeard –Jason Quick, a defender, and Miles Quick, a utility player.
“The squad is coming together quite nicely,” said Legg. “Jason and Miles both have strong characters and the right attitude.
“What we are doing in friendlies is learning about the way we play – and the style of football we want from the players.
“Of course, we are also giving all players a chance to show what they can do. Everyone is getting a chance.
“Most of last season’s squad have re-signed, including Glenn Wright who captained the side at Minehead last week.”
In their first pre-season game, Wellington won 3-0 against the Seasiders – all the goals coming in the first half, before the referee brought an end to the game in fading light.
“It was a good game and a good workout for the lads,” said Legg. “We used a total of 16 players.”
Former Tiverton Town striker Jesse Howe netted the first goal from the penalty spot in the 21st minute after Wright had been brought down and Howe netted a second in the 37th minute from Josh Champion’s cross. Tom Davies scored the third in the 43rd minute from a corner by George Sinnott.
Wellington continue their build-up to the new season with another friendly – this time away to Middlezoy Rovers on Wednesday, August 19.
