WELLINGTON ended their home fixtures in the Premier Division of the Jewson Football League with a 3-1 home win over Street on Wednesday night, so completing the season’s double over their rivals.
After three successive defeats, the Tangerines got back to winning ways thanks to two goals in the final ten minutes.
Wellington made the perfect start when Ryan Brereton opened the scoring after only four minutes, driving home from 25 yards.
Street responded by forcing a decent save from keeper Andy Collings, who kept out a downward header to preserve Wellington’s advantage.
Chances remained at a premium as Wellington looked to build on their lead, with Jordan Hayman heading wide before Collings was called into action again, producing two important saves in quick succession.
Street emerged strongly after half-time and drew level in the 53rd minute when Scott Laird capitalised on a loose ball in the box to fire home.
The visitors pressed for a second, but Hayman produced an excellent block to keep the scores level, while at the other end Oscar Albano was denied in a one-on-one opportunity.
With the game finely poised, Wellington regained the lead in the 80th minute with a cracking goal.
A well-worked move saw Sam Towler find Miles Quick on the right flank, and his pinpoint cross was met by Josh Baker, who dived to head home.
Baker then turned provider in the final minute of normal time, releasing Albano whose initial effort was saved before he reacted quickest to convert the rebound.
The Tangerines’ final two matches are both in Cornwall - at St Blazey on Saturday and at title hopefuls Torpoint Athletic next Tuesday.
