WELLINGTON lst XV play their last rugby match of a painful season in Regional Two South West when they face Okehampton at the Athletic Ground on Saturday, April 11 (3p.m.).
Wellington have lost all 21 of their matches and are 27 points adrift at the bottom of the table, having been certain of relegation for several weeks.
They lost a number of players during the summer and these were never replaced, leaving new head coach Bradley Field with an impossible task of fielding a side capable of being competitive in a strong division. The result has been a number of heavy defeats - and there have also been times when they have not been able to ‘field a front row’ - and forfeited the game.
Okehampton will be chasing the season’s double over Wellington who lost 43-14 when the sides played in Devon on the opening day of the season. Little did Wellington realise at the time this would be one of their closest games of the season.
Fixtures for Saturday, April 11: North Petherton v Teignmouth, Wadebridge Camels v Tiverton, Wellington v Okehampton, Winscombe v Ivybridge, Cullompton v Penzance & Newlyn, Weston super Mare v Crediton.
The only match played in the division last Saturday resulted in an 87-5 away win for Tiverton over Winscombe.
It enabled them to close the gap on 100 per cent leaders Weston super Mare who, with only one match left to play, are assured of winning the championship.
Weston have piled up more than 1000 points in winning all 21 of their games, and go into their last fixture 22 points ahead of Tiverton, who are themselves 11 points clear of third-placed Wadebridge Camels. Okehampton are fourth, three points behind the Camels.
At the other end of the table, Cullompton face relegation along with Wellington.
