WINNERS of the two indoor winter singles competitions at Wellington Bowling Club are Wendy Scott and Ian Hollingsworth, writes Martin Speakman.
Wendy Scott came through as ladies champion and Ian Hollingsworth became the open champion.
Wendy has done really well. She only began bowling three years ago, so to be able to triumph against some very strong club bowlers early in the competition and then win the final was an excellent achievement.
Her opponent in the final was the experienced Diana Dagg who won her earlier matches against the talented Sallyanne Waygood and then the very capable club coach, Angela Moore.
Wendy came through an early match against Jane Hayes and managed to win a close battle against the talented new bowler Rosemary Small.
In the final against Diana Dagg, Wendy was on top form and made sure of a comfortable victory and celebrate becoming this year's ladies indoor champion.
There were 22 entrants for the Open Singles competition. A lot of closely fought games were played through the winter and just eight bowlers were left to battle it out in the quarter-finals.
Steve Horrill won against Martin Speakman 19 – 16 in a close match, Ian Hollingsworth enjoyed a good win over Robert Higgs 23 – 9, Roy Marriott beat one of the favourites Phil Ellis and Peter White won a very close battle against Barry Cutler.
In the semi-finals, Ian Hollingsworth came through a very tight match against Steve Horrill 16 – 10.
Roy Marriott was the winner of the second semi-final against Peter White after a very competitive 21 – 13 victory.
Roy did all he could in the final but it was not his day. Ian Hollingsworth found his very best form to come through for a comfortable 20 – 4 victory and to celebrate becoming this year's Wellington Bowling Club Open Men’s Champion.
