WELLINGTON hope to sign two new defenders before the New Year comes in.

Manager Clive Jones said yesterday: “We don’t have enough defenders at the club.

“I have already spoken to one and I’m hoping he will come to training on Wednesday (tonight) along with another possible new player. We’ve been a bit thin on the ground lately and I need to strengthen the squad.”

Wellington swept to the top of the first division in the Toolstation League on Saturday with a 3-0 home win over Corsham Town.

Jones felt they did not play that well in the first half. “We started off brightly but then allowed them to get back in the game,” said Jones. “However we played really well in the second half up the slope and against the rain.”

Meanwhile Wellington, who are one point clear of main rivals Keynsham Town and also have a game in hand, are away to Westbury United this weekend.

Wellington Reserves will be chasing their first home victory of the season when they play Exmouth Town Reserves in Division One of the Devon and Exeter League. Wellington are second from bottom and in danger of being sucked into a relegation fight unless they start winning games.

Hemyock have a derby game at home to Dunkeswell Rovers in Division Six and will be looking to complete the season’s double, having beaten their neighbours 4-1 away earlier this season.

Wellington Thirds, top of Division Seven in the Devon and Exeter League, have no match.

Wellington’s Boxing Day derby at home to new Toolstation League side Bishops Lydeard is a 12.30 kick off, which means it avoids the big rugby match in the afternoon between Wellington and Wiveliscombe.

Lydeard are in their first season in the Toolstation League and are lying seventh in the table and look quite capable of a top-six finish to the season.

Midfielder Sam Towler, who was involved in an accident with a car in Bournemouth last month, is to see a specialist in Exeter this week. He injured his leg which is not responding to treatment.
