FOUR of Wellington Wildcats’ youth sides were in action last weekend with two wins coming from four outings.
A lovely day greeted the under 12s for their penultimate league game at Pen Mill. They started brightly, taking the lead through an unfortunate own goal from a Millie G corner, before Millie G struck directly from another superb corner to make it 2-0. Pen Mill responded quickly, catching Wildcats off guard to reduce the deficit.
The second half saw a much stronger Wildcats display as they limited Pen Mill’s possession and added two more goals. Sara M scored a brilliant volley from a pinpoint Hayley C cross, and Isla M netted her first goal of the season with a composed lob over the keeper.
A solid 4-1 win, which saw Summer H named as player-of-the-match, sets them up nicely for this weekend’s cup semi-final.
The Under 13s delivered an outstanding performance against Chew Valley, securing a dominant 6-0 victory.
Bella W opened the scoring early with a powerful strike from the edge of the area, before Iyla J doubled the lead, reacting quickest to turn home a Poppy G corner. Wildcats controlled the game and extended their lead before half-time, with Madeline H-W finishing confidently from another dangerous Poppy G delivery.
The second half continued in the same fashion, starting with Darcey S who showed determination to chase down a through ball and finish calmly for 4-0.
After two assists, Poppy G deservedly scored at the back post, and Iyla J completed the scoring with her second of the match.
It was a complete team performance, with special praise for a solid defence that denied Chew Valley any momentum. The player-of-the-match was Mary H.
The under 15d ended their league season with a narrow 4-3 defeat away to Berrow. After a slow start and conceding from a corner, Wildcats grew into the game as Flo N equalised, and just before half-time Faith NH scored from long range to give Wildcats a 2-1 lead.
In the second half, Emilia S combined well with player-of-the-match Lola S to extend the lead to 3-1, before the hosts fought back.
With 25 minutes remaining, tired legs, a disputed penalty and strong Berrow play saw the hosts level the score.
A collision during the winning goal forced keeper Sophie W off, with Isla C stepping in.
Despite the result, the team showed great character and resilience, reflecting a season of strong development and team spirit.
The under 16s finished their league season with an exciting draw against Portishead, securing second place overall.
After a slow start and conceding first, Emilia S quickly equalised before keeper Jasmine S made an important save to keep Wildcats in the game.
Portishead regained the lead, but Wildcats responded just before half-time with a well-worked team goal finished by Orlaith C.
The second half saw Wildcats at their best, with a composed defence and energetic midfield controlling much of the contest.
Leah M, named player of the match, was instrumental throughout. Sustained pressure paid off when Orlaith C scored from a tight angle to give Wildcats the lead.
However, Portishead equalised late to ensure a fair result.
Wildcats thank all parents and sponsors for their support and now look ahead to their cup final in May.
