THE enforced lockdown has enabled a number of golfers to play more of the game they all enjoy, strictly, of course, within the Covid 19 government guidelines, none more so than Olivia and Rory Lake who are students at Kingsmead School at Wiveliscombe, writes Richard Walsh.
The 13 year old twins, who live at Bishops Lydeard, have taken full advantage of the extra golf that they have been able to play and have persuaded their mum to take them up to Enmore Park at every available opportunity – and it has certainly paid dividends for them.
The pair took up golf three years ago after being encouraged by their grandad Ray Williams who has been a member at Enmore for over 40 years and have enjoyed their best ever seasons.
Olivia has seen her handicap reduce from 30 to 17, while brother Rory has moved from 30 down to 27 and both have played representative golf for the Enmore Junior section.
Earlier this summer Olivia was invited to take part in the Enmore Ladies Championship, which was a 36 hole competition - the first time she has played two rounds in one day. Not only did she complete the competition but she ended up coming in an impressive fourth place.
Mum Erica said: “They have both really taken to playing golf and its their favourite sport. They are both competitive and always keen to try and do better all of the time. It has been great for them during lockdown because during home schooling as soon as they had finished their work they were off to play golf.
“Everybody has been so kind and encouraging and made them feel so welcome – I can’t thank the people at Enmore enough.”
Next summer the pair will be looking to enter mixed competitions together, in addition to which they will be taking part in junior opens across the South-West.
