TABLE-TOPPERS Wellington will be looking to extend their winning run to 15 matches when they play at home to Withycombe in the Cornwall and Devon League on Saturday (2.30), writes Barry Knott.
With only one match played in the division overf the weekend - Plymstock Albion Oaks beat Hayle 20-13 away - Wellington remain one point clear of second-placed Penryn with a game in hand.
Wellington will be chasing a double over Withycombe, having beaten the Devon side 23-0 away in early November.
“They were a good side,” said Wellington coach Allyn Chetland. “It will be a difficult match for us, especially as there is no continuity or consistency about this season because of the weather.
“It has been a stop-start year so far and we have only managed to play three games so far. It has also been very difficult to train.
“There again everyone’s in the same boat. We just have to pick up where we left off. But it is all very frustrating.”
Wellington will be without both Micky Norman (groin) and Harry Ramsey (wrist) who have injuries which require surgery and will not play again this season.
There is also a doubt over Somerset Under 20 second row Regan Walker who has an ankle injury. “We’ll know more about him later in the week,” added Chetland.
Wellington, whose match at home to Torrington last weekend was postponed because of snow, have also extended the season to Saturday, April 28, to enable them to complete their fixtures.
Some clubs are also being allowed to play on Easter Monday.
Wellington do not want to go into May because this would clash with the club’s mini-tour to Majorca. “I don’t know what we would do if we were given a fixture in May,” said Chetland. “We certainly will not be cancelling the tour. We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.”
Hopefully, Wellington 2nd XV will also be back in action on Saturday when they play away to Crewkerne in Somerset One. Wellington will be looking to pull off the season’s double, having beaten the South Somerset side 24-19 at home earlier this season.
