DESPITE heroic defending, Wellington went down to a 62-0 away defeat against 100 per cent leaders Weston super Mare in their latest rugby match in Regional Two South West.
However, Wellington did not get off on the right foot, starting the game with only 14 players with three members of the side held up on the motorway.
Weston took only eight minutes to go ahead, scoring an unconverted try against Wellington’s stretched defence.
The seasiders then scored a converted try to go 12-0 up, and soon after scored another try, which was also converted, to lead 19-0.
Weston continued to show why they are top of the table by scoring two more tries to go 29-0 up after 40 minutes. And just before the interval Weston struck again by snapping up another try to lead 34-0.
From this point on, it was a case of damage limitation by Wellington - but they found it difficult to keep out the rampant home side who were chasing their 16th win of the season.
Weston began to turn the screw in the second half and extended their lead to 48-0 with two converted tries.
Wellington continued to defend resolutely but could not prevent Weston running in two more converted tries for a 62-0 victory.
It enabled them to open up a 29-point lead over second-placed Tiverton who have three matches in hand after their home game against Okehampton was postponed because of the bad weather.
At the other end of the table, Wellington have now lost all 14 of their league fixtures and trail the next placed side Cullompton by 16 points.
Meanwhile Wellington 2nd XV, with only one win this season, were due to play at home to Bridgwater & Albion Seconds in Counties Three Somerset at the Athletic Ground but this match was called off because the pitch was waterlogged.
