WELLINGTON led twice before eventually losing 60-14 at home to Teignmouth in their latest match in Regional Two South West.

The home side, 23 points adrift at the bottom of the table before this game, took a surprise lead after only seven minutes when Jason Rowland went over for a try which was converted by Mikey Taylor.

Teignmouth, lying tenth in the division with five victories from their 17 fixtures, were back on level terms six minutes later when they snapped up a converted try.

Wellington’s response was another try in the 14th minute, this time from skipper George Hodgson which was again converted by Taylor for a 14-7 lead to the home outfit.

However, the Devon side were back on level terms again within four minutes with a converted try and then piled on the pressure, scoring another four tries, two of which were converted, plus a penalty, to go in at the interval 34-14 up.

Any hopes of a successful fightback in the second half were dashed when Teignmouth added to their score with a converted try to lead 41-14.

With the game now well out of their reach, Wellington’s tryline was breached another three times, with two of the tries being converted, in the last 15 minutes.

It was a game which began promisingly for Wellington but, in the end, they were beaten by a better team. But at least they had the satisfaction of scoring their first points of the year.

Victory enabled Teignmouth to complete the season’s double over Wellington, having won 40-12 on their own ground when they met in early November.

Wellington are next in action in the league on Saturday, March 7, when they play away to Winscombe who are lying in mid-table.

Wellington will be looking to avoid the season’s double to Winscombe, having lost 52-10 at home in late November.
