IN-FORM Wellington RFC know they will have to be on top of their game on Saturday to avoid a surprise defeat at basement side Saltash in the Western Counties West division.

Wellington have made an encouraging start to the 2019-20 season and this continued last weekend with a 41pts-22 victory over newly-promoted Penryn.

But coach Allyn Chetland knows there is a long way to go yet and a lot of hard work to be done before thoughts turn to possible championships.

And he knows his players will have to be up for their next challenge - an away game at Saltash.

Wellington travel to bottom-of-the-table Saltash this Saturday and Chetland will be expecting the same level of focus on the match as if they were facing the team top-of-the-table.

“The Cornish side haven’t started this campaign well and are currently propping up the league,” said Chetland.

“But, if past experiences are anything to go by, Saltash is difficult place to go and get a result – we will need to be fully focused to achieve this.”

Chetland said he was delighted with a good all-round team performance which overcame the threat of Penryn last weekend. “It was another well-deserved win and another great squad performance from The R&Bs,” he said.

“Out in the three quarters Ash Harney and George Hodgson always looked dangerous with ball in hand whilst up front Martin Walker had another good game at prop with Cam Venn and Liam Phillips also showing up well.”

The victory kept Wellington tucked in nicely in second spot in the league table - biting at the heels of leaders St Austell who have a four-point advantage.

Wiveliscombe have moved off the bottom of the Western Counties West table and up to ninth in the 14-team division after their exciting 26pts-19 victory over Teignmouth last Saturday.

This weekend they face another struggling team when they also travel to Cornwall to face Falmouth.

Wiveliscombe are back at home on October 26 when they play host to Tiverton, who are also currently at the wrong end of the able, while Wellington will be facing their biggest test of the season so far on October 26 when league leaders and title rivals St Austell are the visitors to The Athletic Ground.
