WELLINGTON play their last game of a long and hard season when they meet Crediton away in Western Counties West on Saturday.

The visitors go into the game already certain of finishing bottom and being relegated.

“We’re already looking forward to regrouping for next season,” said acting coach Allyn Chatfield. “The lads have tried their best and have not always enjoyed the best of luck.

“But it’s a young side and I’m sure they will bounce back.”

A month ago Wellington were optimistic they might avoid the drop, especially after they won 10-6 at Sidmouth towards the end of March.

But successive defeats at home to St Ives 48-5 and away to St Austell 28-14 left them in a hopeless situation.

Their opponents Crediton have not fared much better and will finish just above the relegation zone.

The Wellington squad for Crediton is likely to be similar to the one which played at St Austell although skipper and No8 Dan Moore and back rower Chris Kitto could both be back after missing recent games. But Alex Davey and veteran Tim Jenkinson are both ruled out.

The difficulty in fielding a settled side has been the main problem for Wellington. They have hardly ever been able to name an unchanged team for various reasons. Although it has not been confirmed, Wellington are likely to be playing in Somerset Premier next season.

Meanwhile Wellington 2nd XV complete a more than satisfactory season in Somerset One with a home game against Castle Cary.

At present they are lying ninth, one point behind Old Bristolians, and could move up a place if they win.

The Seconds have gained some notable wins recently - 50-7 against Yatton and 88-5 against Wells. They have also put up spirited displays against the top two teams Imperial and Minehead Barbarians.
