WELLINGTON will be chasing the season’s double against Whitehall when they play away to their Western Counties North rivals on Saturday.

However, having won narrowly 14-13 against Whitehall at the Athletic Ground in November, the return fixture is likely to be equally close.

Ben Gamlin, Dan Lee and Neville Pitman will be back in contention after missing Wellington’s latest win – a 15-14 thriller against Burnham on Sea 11 days ago- but player-coach Matt Parsons is unavailable.

Parsons, whose kicking has been spot-on in the last month, will be in France for the international and he said last night "It sounds hypocritical to say I will be missing the game because I will be watching England play but this was a birthday present which was set up some time ago. Everything has been in place for some time.

But he added: “We’re not safe by any means. Our aim between now and the end of the season is to target every match and make sure we get something out of each one – a losing point if need be.”

Wellington have eased their worries over relegation but had no match last weekend. Parsons’ boys have won three successive games and the side is playing with more confidence.

Another key player missing for Saturday is hooker Joe Dyke who has been a first team regular since recovering from an early season injury.

“Joe’s been having a very good season so it is disappointing he is out,” added Parsons. “He is out for two weeks on a family holiday.”

Parsons says the side will be similar to the one which beat Burnham. “I think we will be reluctant to change a winning team unless we have to,” he said. “However, of course, there will be enforced changes.”

Former captain and scrum half Tim Jenkinson is still absent from the side through injury but is now back in training.

Jenks, who expects to play first team rugby before the season ends, has been very much involved in the running of the club’s under 18 side this season.

Wellington will also be looking for a good display on Saturday before they play at home to the division’s outstanding side Matson, who have yet to be beaten this season. Wellington put up a spirited display away to Matson in October before losing 41-7, a result which flattered the home side.

Wellington 2nd XV, who have been improving all season under skipper Dave Turney, are home to Castle Carey in Somerset One.

Wiveliscombe are away to Winscombe in Somerset Premier while Wivey 2nds are home to their Wells counterparts.

Wellington Rugby Club will be holding a Super Saturday 6 Nations Lunch on Saturday (12.30, in time to watch the day’s internationals on the big screen). For more details and to book your place contact Bodmin on 01823 661715 or 07794 182285.

Wellington slipped down a place to 11th on points difference in Western Counties North after Avon picked up a losing point in a 23-20 defeat away to Old Bristolians on Saturday.
