AFTER the frustration of the first round at Brands Hatch in March being cancelled due to bad weather, local motorcycle racer Phil Webber

was raring to go at the ‘new’ opener for North Glos Road Racing at Anglesey Circuit in North Wales - and he certainly didn’t disappoint, writes Kerry Rawson.

Despite limited pre-season testing Phil felt really comfortable and had great pace during Friday practice so hopes were high heading into the weekend’s event.  With back to back qualifying on both bikes, Saturday morning was a baptism of fire for Phil, qualifying on his pro stock first then quickly jumping off that bike and setting off straight away on the Pre Injection machine which are two completely different animals. However, this still didn’t hinder him at all.  Saturday afternoon didn’t get any easier with his first races of the season again being back to back. He was out on the Pro Stock first during which he led from start to finish and broke his own lap record from last year!

After a quick machine change he started from pole position in the Pre Injection race and led all the way, also setting a new lap record well and truly throwing the gauntlet down for fellow competitors.  Sunday morning brought tricky conditions for the second set of races but even in the wet Phil managed to win on both bikes.

In true Anglesey style the weather dried up on Sunday afternoon for the third and final set of races of the weekend enabling Phil to continue his winning ways for the Pro Stock race. But in the very final Pre Injection race of the weekend disaster stuck and after pulling out a big lead over the rest of the pack he got black flagged for safety reasons due to the front mudguard coming loose and rubbing on the tyre causing it to smoke.  But with an almost perfect weekend with five wins out of six races and setting new lap records in both classes, Phil’s certainly not disappointed and is definitely looking forward to the next round at Cadwell Park May 11-12.
