AN 87-year-old Wellington woman says she feels 'terrible’ after she had her wallet stolen from her shopping trolley.
Cherry Hitchcock was making her first trip into town following a bout of flu and visited Lloyds Bank in Fore Street, Wellington, to take out £125 in cash, some of it to be paid to her gardener.
She went on to visit Waitrose in the town and only discovered her wallet was missing when she went to pay last Saturday.
“I couldn’t have dropped the wallet because it was right down the bottom of the trolley,” she said. “The cashier did not know what to do.
“I immediately informed the police at the local station and they said they would look into it because it had not been handed in to them. I really feel bad about it because it has caused me all sorts of problems.
“I had cards in there which I needed to cancel and my bus pass was also in the wallet. I have to pay £10 to get another.”
She added: “The only good thing to come out of this is that a kind man in the queue at the supermarket paid my bill and then drove me home. He didn’t have to do that.
“Isn’t a pity we have these awful people who are prepared to steal from the elderly. Then, at the same time, there is also kindness around.”
The incident occurred at about 1.30pm on Saturday.
Anyone who saw someone acting suspiciously near the Lloyds Bank is asked to contact the police.
