THE dangers of drink-driving appear to be hitting home with people in Wellington after a campaign by police to catch boozing motorists over the festive season resulted in no arrests.

Police carried out organised vehicle stops in Wellington on Sunday, December 22, in a bid to catch drink-drivers and those with any other motoring offences.

A total of 600 vehicles were stopped and 80 people were breathalysed but not a single person was found to be over the limit.

Although police reported to Wellington Town Council this month that the same operation netted four traffic offences for no MoT and one vehicle was seized for having no tax, councillors were impressed at the zero arrests for drink-driving.

Deputy Mayor Cllr Mark Lithgow said: “People realise that drink-driving and drug-driving just isn’t acceptable.”
