A fire in a three-storey property being renovated in North Street, Wellington, was attended by seven fire engines plus specialist support vehicles last night (October 20-21).

Several local residents called the emergency services as smoke billowed from the ground floor at about 11.15pm, and crews arrived to find the first floor was well alight.

At that time, it was not clear whether anyone was inside the building. Firefighters searched the premises and at 12.15am it was confirmed that no-one was inside. The fire then took hold and spread throughout the building.

It took them until 3.26am to confirm that the incident was under control and the fire, which started accidentally, was out.

The seven fire engines at the scene were from Wellington, Taunton, Bridgwater and Wiveliscombe, with specialist support vehicles from Burnham, Street and Bridgwater.
