THE musical director of chamber choir Amici, Andrew Trewhella, isn’t just a brilliant conductor in what might be termed the ‘standard choral repertoire’ – he is also accomplished and very enthusiastic in the genre of music theatre.

So it’s probably not surprising that his fertile mind came up with the idea of linking a chamber choir to the repertoire of the Hollywood and Broadway music scene.

Many award-winning numbers from the great stage and screen musicals have been arranged for four-part choir and Andrew has done his best to come up with a set of songs which all come from productions which have taken the honours at the Oscars and other award ceremonies over many years.

All the big names are there – Gershwin, Bernstein, Kern, Mancini, Rodgers and Hammerstein are rubbing shoulders with Sondheim and Lloyd-Webber. Even ABBA gets a look-in!

Amici will be performing these great songs in St John’s Church, Wellington, on Saturday (July 8) at 7.30pm. Tickets (£12 – under 12s admitted free) are available through the Amici website (www.amicichoir.org.uk), Taunton Visitor Centre (01823 340470) and Interiors and Flowers by Design in Wellington (01823 662143).

In the autumn the choir will begin rehearsals for a November presentation of ‘Messiah’, a gala performance with high-profile soloists. This concert will be in conjunction with the NSPCC as a fundraiser for the charity and will take place on November 18 at St Mary Magdalene, Taunton. Check the website for details as they become available.
