POLICE are appealing for witnesses and information after a 28-year-old man was left with serious head injuries after he was assaulted in Wellington in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The incident took place just before 1am.

Officers say the victim was first assaulted near Cornhill in North Street, and then again a few minutes later near Wellington fire station in North Street.

The victim is being treated in hospital for his injuries. Police have not released his name, or where he is being treated.

Four males have been arrested and are currently on police bail. A fifth is being sought.
