THE grandson of a late Wellington man has paid tribute to his grandfather’s role 75 years after a Second World War operation to provide Malta with vital supplies.
David Ackroyd, of Mantle Street, said his grandfather Herbert (‘Bert’/‘Herbie’) John Ling took part in Operation Pedestal, known in Malta as the Santa Marija Convoy, in August 1942.
Herbert was in the Royal Artillery but assigned to the Merchant Navy as a gunner in Operation Pedestal on the Rochester Castle.
