Mayor of Wellington Janet Lloyd has visited the new Wellington Bakehouse on the corner of High Street and South Street.
The shop used to be home to the former Shaul’s Bakery, which closed last year.
Wellington Bakehouse opened after a successful four-week stint at Wellington Town Council’s Pop-Up Shop.
The bakery is run by Craig and Karen Holmes, who also run the Beambridge Inn at Sampford Arundel and The Windmill Inn at Williton.
Craig said: “It is a great initiative by Wellington Town Council encouraging traders to test the high street market at a reasonable cost without entering into a long-term contract.
“While we felt there was real call for a bakery shop to return to Wellington high street, only through taking up this offer were we able to truly see the extent that the people of this town want to support local traders.”
This is the second business to have taken up premises in the town after using the Pop-Up Shop. Nook & Cranny in North Street opened in July 2020.
Mayor Janet Lloyd said: “Yet again the concept of the Pop-Up Shop has achieved its aim and another business has successfully tried trading and has taken over another empty shop in the town.”
The town council is working on renewing the lease for the premises.
The shop is at capacity booking for 2021 until the Christmas bookings period for which applications are now open.
Anyone who would like to test their business in the Pop-Up Shop can find out more on the council’s website, www.wellingtontowncouncil.co.uk/pop-up-shop, or e-mail [email protected]
