WORK is expected to start shortly on an access road for Wellington’s planned new railway station.

The access from Nynehead Road running behind the town’s Lidl supermarket will be built by Bloor Homes South West.

The company was this week granted full planning permission for 178 houses from which Bloor will cover the cost of the station approach.

The firm will also provide a triangular-shaped ‘station square’ to be given to the town council with a centrepiece of the original Wellington Monument pyramidion - the pointed top which was replaced during restoration by the National Trust.

Network Rail is due soon to submit a planning application for the railway station and car park development itself, with the new station expected to be operational by late 2028.
