BUDDING beekeepers are being invited to join a beginners’ course at Somerset Beekeepers’ Association’s apiary near Bradford-on-Tone.

The course starts with a series of six theory sessions covering an introduction to beekeeping, the life cycle of the honeybee, choosing equipment, siting an apiary and pests and diseases.

Practical sessions then give participants expertly guided experience of handling bees and managing colonies. Theory sessions are held on Wednesday from 7.30pm to about 9.30pm and practical sessions monthly on Saturday from 2.30pm to about 4pm (weather permitting).

The course starts on Wednesday, February 22, and the final practical session is on Saturday, September 30. Numbers are limited to 25 and the cost is £95.
