THE National Trust is launching a special walking event – and asking the public to take up the challenge of raising funds to help repair Wellington Monument.

Walkers can set off on either a challenging 10k or 21k walk on in the Monumental Trek on Saturday, May 11. They will cross the Quantocks and Blackdown Hills, enjoying incredible views and scenery, while raising funds in support of the monument.

National Trust community fundraiser and engagement officer for Wellington Monument, Emma Jones said: “While working with the local communities, I have been overwhelmed with the love and support for this special place.

“May is National Walking Month and we wanted to celebrate this with a mighty fundraising event. The walk will be a tough challenge to take on and we will support you every step of the way with a training plan and suggested walking routes to keep you motivated. We are also really excited that Cotswold Outdoor will also be involved supporting and promoting The Monumental Trek”.

The National Trust in Somerset looks after land across two designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and the walking routes will take the walkers across this diverse and beautiful landscape.

Emma said: “Participants will be raising money for the conservation work of Wellington Monument, which needs essential and urgent repairs. The monument has stood at the heart of the community for generations.

“It’s a place where people go to create memories, and enjoy the outdoors and stunning views. It’s part of our history and we want to bring the whole community together to make sure it’s part of our future as well.”

The full repair will cost £3.8 million – so far through donations and grants the National Trust has raised £2.6 million.

There will be a registration fee for the walk and a minimum fundraising target of £100 for the 10k and £200 for the 20k. All money raised will go towards the Wellington Monument appeal. Only 300 places are on offer on the Monumental Trek, so people are being asked to apply as quickly as possible to ensure they get a place.

Outdoor events company Adventure Café has created the two routes and will also provide support to all the walkers on the day.
