THE Big Tent was back in action for a seventh year in Wellington last week in a large marquee on the sports field at Wellesley Park Primary School.

The three-day holiday club was run by Wellington’s churches for primary school aged children and this year’s theme was Landlubbers!

Some 85 youngsters joined the Pirate Crew on a treasure island for a varied programme of drama, games, competitions, songs, crafts and Bible stories, and to explore some of the encouraging words St Paul wrote to his friends about living life.

The event ran from Tuesday to Thursday from 10am-3pm each day using the 30-metre Big Tent and the outdoor space to the full.

It was made possible by a team of more than 25 volunteers from local churches ranging from teenagers to those in their 70s, a number of whom are involved in work with schools all year round.

It ended with a chance for parents to see what their children had been up to, followed by tea and cakes for all the family.

Methodist outreach worker and school chaplain Helena Power said: “What a great bunch of children took part in this year’s Big Tent! They sang and danced, made wonderful artwork, threw themselves into the games and made the week a great success. They were kind and thoughtful to each other, and a pleasure to be with. Hope to see all of them again soon.”

Wellington Baptist Church Pastor Revd Sam Griffiths said: “Once again The Big Tent provided three days of top-notch fun, songs, craft, games and laughter in a week that has been our best yet with every aspect going precisely to plan.

“Thanks must go to our upfront team led by Andy Levett, all of our group helpers and all who have contributed to making The Big Tent happen. We thank all of our churches and Wellington Town Council for supporting this event and Wellesley Park Primary School for allowing us to use its site”.

The Big Tent has a Facebook page where details of future events will be posted. Video highlights of this year’s event can also be found on The Big Tent Wellington YouTube channel.
