A BLAZE broke out yesterday evening (Friday) on part of a newly created forest garden in Wellington.

At around 8pm on Friday 29th July, fire was reported to have broken out on part of the new forest garden on Fox’s Field, next to Tonedale Mill.

Part of the area which had been mulched with hay in preparation for planting up of a herb area was smouldering and sometimes in flames, and another patch was smouldering nearby.

Luckily, the smoke was noticed by several passers-by, and the fire service alerted.

Their swift response and dedicated action in dowsing the flames and beating down the smouldering patches saved many of the trees and bushes.

Within ten minutes, the Transition Town Wellington team - who were been responsible for designing and creating the forest garden, with active and dedicated support from many members of the local community - were on the field armed with buckets and watering cans, bringing water up from the stream to help stop the fire spreading.
