LIDL has applied for planning permission to build a new supermarket at the Cades Farm roundabout on the Taunton Road at Wellington.

The application to go before Somerset West and Taunton Council is at the early stages with a consultation period until October 9 for the public to express their views. The authority has until December 16 to make a decision.

The discount chain wants to build a 22,500 sq ft store on two-thirds of a five-acre site with the remainder given over to car parking.

Vehicles would enter the site from Nynehead Road, with pedestrian access from a point near the bus stop on the A38 just to the west of the roundabout.

Parking would be provided for 126 cars – including six disabled spaces, nine parent and child, and two which would provide active charging points for electric vehicles, and stands for up to 12 bicycles.

The new Lidl would create about 40 jobs, equivalent to 23 full-time employees. In the UK as a whole the German-owned chain has 800 stores and employs about 10,000 people.

As part of the Cades Longforth Farm development Lidl has prepared a landscaping scheme which comprises the retention of the existing hedgerows and hedgerow trees along the western and southern boundaries. This assists in screening views of the proposed development from nearby residential properties, transport routes and the wider landscape.

Wellington Town Council is likely to discuss the application at its next meeting on October 5.
